The 21st Century Challenges for Teaching Languages is an academic event promoted by a partnership established between the Office for International Affairs and the Coordination for Foreign Languages at Universidade Federal do Piauí  (UFPI) and the U. S. Consulate General, in Recife, Brazil.

During the event, that will take place on September 26-28, 2018, a series of free-of-charge talks and workshops will be held at Centro de Tecnologia (CT) at UFPI. The topics discussed will cover a wide range of aspects related to English language teaching strategies.

The target audience (English teachers from public and private schools as well as undergraduate English students) is limited to a maximum of 180 participants, selected according to subscription order. Subscriptions will be taken exclusively online. The lectures and workshops will be delivered in English.

Keynote Speaker

Julia Hedges is a Master of Education - TESOL, from Concordia University in Portland, Oregon. She Graduated in English and Spanish at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. She taught English as a foreign language to adults and teenagers in the US and the Middle East. She has been an Intensive English Language Instructor (IEP) teacher in Colorado and Texas, and has created an English language center focused on test preparation, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and teacher training. She has also trained teachers in six countries in best practices in teaching English using communicative methodology. She is a member of the Colorado TESOL Council, leading the Education / Teacher Action Research commission. She has an special interest in teaching with a focus on students, in the use of Computers in Language Learning (CALL) as a complementary instrument for teaching and engaging students, and in the design and elaboration of pedagogical materials.
